Appraisal wanted on a bike.

I've heard conversation coming out of animal pens that is more intelligent than what is going on in here.

Appraisal wanted on a bike.

Post by Voutare »

I've been searching for a Dirtbike a lot lately, (thanks MX Sim), and I came across a 2001 RM 125. Now, first things first:

I have no money, I don't want to spend a shitload, and I work try to work whenever I am not in school. So, that being said, I have not a lot of time to ride, so why buy a 2008?

Anway, this Rm 125 I found, I really want. Here's a description and a new pictures.

Tires and sprockets are fine, so I didn't post those pictures. Anyway, here's the description, which tells me shit, it doesn't even mention that is has REP.

2001 Suzuki RM125 Looks and Runs Perfect. Low miles. Many aftermarket parts, very fast, never raced. Minor dent in pipe. Good tires. Starts with one kick. Don't miss this deal at the perfect time of year to ride! Selling to buy my son a quad.

How much? He said he won't sell it for any less than 1,800, which seems like complete bullshit for an 01.

I don't know, I would probably think about buying it if it were in my area, just my opinion. I am looking for a 125 for my brother, since he outgrew a kx100. But anyway, back to the rm. I paid 1700 for a '01 cr125 plus 50 for a lift stand. The only mod that it had done to it was a 180 dollar x-ring chain. In my area, most 125's, even '01s, go for at least two grand if they are in good condition. Don't know where your at though. Just for reference, that bike new would've cost about 5,600 plus dealer, tax, license fees.

Here's what you get when you put "2001 125" into newjersey.craigslist.org:

Apr 3 - 2001 yz 125 needs to go !!!!!!!!!!!!! - $1700 - (belle mead, NJ) pic
Apr 1 - 2001 Honda CR 125 - $2000 - (Roxbury) pic
Mar 31 - 2001 KX 125 Dirt Bike, Motorcycle, Recreation Vehicle, Off Road - $1300 - (Glen Gardner, NJ)
Mar 24 - 2001 Honda Cr125 GREAT CONDITION - $1800 - (Norwood Nj ) pic
Mar 13 - 2001 KX 125 Dirt Bike - $1400 - (Glan Gardner, NJ)
Mar 9 - 2001 yz 125 - $1700 - (skillman,NJ) pic

So in NJ at least, they go from $1300 to $2000.

Btw, if REP milled the head you might have to run race gas in that bike.

If I gave my kid a new xr100 and he didn't like it I'd put him up for adoption! :D

if thats $1800 that's not bad in the UK (around £900??) for a 2001 if its in as good a condition as he says, but i would go and check it over before actually putting forward the cash,(cameras CAN somtimes lie) and if you can take someone experienced who knows exactly what to look for then do it.

Good luck and have fun

ya 1800 isnt bad id go over and take someone who knows about bieks ( if you dont) and start it listen for knoks and see how it rides also take off teh seat and look at the air filter take off teh air filter and make sure theres no dirt in the air box

here i looked this up it should help you

So it's time for a new set of wheels, used dirt bikes are a viable option when you haven't got a lazy 10 grand to spend on a brand new bike. That's all fine and good but there are certainly a lot of things to keep in mind when searching for a cheap dirt bike.
First up you need to decide exactly what your budget is, this will help you to narrow your search, if you're after a cheap dirt bike this may limit your options somewhat. If you have a particular bike or bikes in mind do a little research, back issues of bike magazines may have a review of the model you are looking at when it was released, find out if the bike had any maintenance and reliability issues etc. this is all handy info when you actually go to look at a bike.

There are plenty of used dirt bikes being sold by private sellers and you certainly have a better chance of picking up a bargain cheap dirt bike as opposed to buying from a bike dealer but you need to be very wary of stolen bikes. If the bike looks like the chassis numbers have been altered or are missing all together then the bike is almost certainly stolen. Leave immediately and pass on the info to the police, if the seller has a legitimate reason then they can explain it to the cops. We need to do everything we can to stop these scumbags that steal bikes.

Scour the local papers, here in Australia Just Bikes Magazine has a large range of used dirt bikes and the Trading Post is another good place to start. Dealers advertise in these publications as well as private sellers and there are all types of dirt bikes advertised, enduro, motocross as well as trail bikes. Just remember though, if you find a cheap dirt bike that seems too good to be true, particularly with private sellers, it probably is.

Once you've found some prospects that seem promising, it's time to take a look. Don't be suprised if the seller doesn't want you to go to their house to look at the bike, people that steal bikes read the classifieds for used dirt bikes too and if you were selling a bike you wouldn't want a stranger seeing all your goodies in your shed or garage.

Have a good look at the bike, does it seem well maintained? Remember that the seller will have probably dressed the bike up before selling it, new chain and sprockets etc. this doesn't mean that the bike has been well looked after. Has it been raced? Only trailridden? They will tell you whatever you want to hear but with a close inspection you should have a fair idea of what work the bike's done.

If you're not overly confident inspecting used dirt bikes, take along someone who has a reasonable mechanical knowledge. Take note of any repairs the bike needs or obvious faults that need fixing, you can use this info when negotiating a price. If the bike is not what you're after then just tell the seller that and leave, selling a bike can be frustrating enough so don't waste anyone's time.

Take the bike for a ride, if the seller won't let you then it's time to leave, there's plenty more used dirt bikes around. You're probably not going to be able to take it too far, unfortunately some individuals have scored a very cheap dirt bike by taking it for a test ride around the corner and never coming back. Make sure the gearbox and clutch feel OK, the bike steers alright and there aren't any horrific rattles coming from the motor.

If the bike seems like a good deal then it's time to negotiate a price, it's rare that the seller won't move at all on what they will accept. If the bike needs work politely point that out and ask that the price be adjusted accordingly, if you can do the work yourself then you can end up with a genuinely cheap dirt bike. If everyone is in agreeance, then fork out the cash and make the arrangements to pick up your new pride and joy!

Yeah, I know a whole lot about bikes, my family has raced, and I've owned 5 since the time I was 4. My friends uncle was a pro, and I spent most of my time working with him trying to get better, along with my friend.

Just looking in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Mass, the average price for a 2001 is around 1400. Granted, this bike does have a lot of work on it, and looks nice in the pictures, but it still seems steep, regardless of aftermarket parts.

I'm looking at a 2001 YZ125 for $1250, I plan to go look at it in a couple days, and I'm going to guess it's beat to hell, whatever.

Heres my .02% for what its worth. I just got rid of my 04RMZ 250 last summer, and i let it go for $2000. IDK if you remember the pics, but it was pretty BA in my opinion. Idk what your looking for as far as two stroke or four, but i'm guaranteeing you can find newer than 01 for that price range. Of course an 01 has a ton of goodies, its been around 8 years. I would definitely go check the bike out in person, listen to it run, check the key parts over. A very important thing to do as mentioned earlier, take off the seat and check the air filter. If its dirty and soiled and theirs dirt in the airbox, theres a good chance the owner didn't take very good care of it.

I got my super modded 03 rm125 for $2000. It just all depends on who is selling the bike. The guy I bought mine off of was rich, had 2 new 09 yamaha's, so he could have cared less if the bike when for a penny.
