Yea I'm pretty sure a retarder is the same thing as we call a "jake brake" over here. When you engage it, it uses the compression from the motor to effectively double the affect of engine braking. Not sure how it works exactly but that is what it is. Really essential when going downhill in a loaded rig. You could easily burn through your brakes if you aren't using the jake brake.
