I've heard conversation coming out of animal pens that is more intelligent than what is going on in here.

It’s time to announce the winners of the 2022 World of Echo Film Festival! Much like last year, we had a tight race to the top in our Short Form category between two deserving filmmakers, but in the end the judges gave the edge to New Zealand’s Thomas Greenaway! Thomas gave us a gritty look into the daily life of Ezra Holmes, a young New Zealander with lofty goals and the tenacity required to chase them. Thomas walks away with the $500 grand prize, ADV Brand merch, and the inaugural Kyle Cowling award for outstanding cinematography.

1st Place - Short Form - Thomas Greenaway

It wouldn’t have been a close race without a contender, and Tommaso Marzaro and the boys at AstroClub gave it their all! The Italians’ sprawling documentary of Mattia Guadagnini’s journey to America came up just short of the grand prize, but they still walk away with their heads held high.

2nd Place - Short Form - Astro Club

Rounding out the podium was France’s Ugo Dessertenne, for his work with the wild Spaniard Navas Petit. They receive some gas money for their efforts.

3rd Place - Short Form - Ugo Dessertenne

And of course, honorable mention going out to Ian Howes for his wicked piece on Johnny Girroir in the sands of Southwick.

Honorable Mention - Short Form - Ian Howes

In our Long Form category, we saw former festival contender Reece Gregory take it all the way to the house with his full-length UK amateur motocross film "THE END." Reece took his notes from last year and showed the judges that he could improve on his previous work, netting him the win and the $500 prize that comes with it. Along with some ADV merch, of course.

1st Place - Long Form - Reece Gregory

In the silver medal position, it was the popular Netherlands duo of Joël Janssen and Rob Windt showing us around the Pro National circuit in their film, "Lost American." Joël is known for his popular Instagram clip page, Showpony Films, but in 2022 he decided to try his own hand at filmmaking, and it netted him $250 in this year's festival.

2nd Place - Long Form - Joël Janssen

On the third step of the box was Australia's Charles Allardice for his work on the crowd-favorite "TasMANIACS," a 30+ minute feature on the fun-loving crew out of Australia's southern island spot. Charles gets a couple bucks to spread amongst his peeps.

3rd Place - Long Form - Charles Allardice

And, of course, an honorable mention goes out to Canada's (and MX Simulator's own) Joseph Pilsner, with his VHS-themed picture "Weyburn Motocross."

Thomas is an up and coming kid from New Zealand who, after nabbing a feature in the 2021 festival showcase, put his head down and went all in for 2022. He was rewarded for his efforts by the judges with top placement, and gained notoriety amongst the festival audience with his breathtaking cinematography. Learn more about him, and how he made his award-winning film with Ezra Holmes, by clicking the photo below. Thanks.

Of course we had to get to know our Long Form winner of the film festival as well! England's Reece Gregory walked away in 2021 with an honorable mention, and promptly set his sights on the podium for 2022. With the help of the UK's budding amateur scene, Reece internalized the judges' notes from last year and put together a piece that put him on the top step. I spoke to him about dwelling in rural England, how he got his start in the game, and where he sees himself within that space. He's got high hopes for growth in 2023, and I wouldn't be surprised if we saw some major projects with Reece's name attached in the years to come. Click the image below to learn more about Reece!
