TT 2019: Wednesday Evening’s Practice Session Beaten By Persistent Inclement Weather
By Stevie Rial

It feels like repeating a broken record, but once again the weather has outplayed the event organisers, with tonight’s TT practice session called off.

With a mix of persistent rain, low cloud, mist, fog embarking upon the Mountain Course, Clerk of The Course Gary Thompson had unfortunately no choice but to cancel Wednesday evening’s practice session.

Speaking via Twitter, Thompson MBE BEM announced that today’s practice schedule, will move to a proposed Thursday afternoon session, but that it’s dependent upon the weather been up to scratch.

Clearly losing another evening of practice action, isn’t ideal for event organisers, the teams, the riders.

At the end of the day though, the weather is what it is, and no matter how much you moan about it, and state that could have been done different, you can’t change the current micro climate on the Isle of Man.

If only the weather was presently like this now on Manx shores.

Fingers crossed the weather holds tomorrow, with in particular Mountain Course debutants Lukas Maurer, Ray Casey, David Datzer and Jonathan Goetschy, all needing more track time ahead of race week, as they continue to build up their knowledge, experience and pace around the mythical Mountain Course.

Weather Prevails Again, As Thursday Afternoon Practice Stint Is Abandoned
By Stevie Rial
Updated: May 30, 2019

Unfortunately the weather lords have prevailed again at TT 2019, with today’s proposed practice session abandoned due to another bout of persistent rain, mist emerging upon the legendary Mountain Course.

Speaking via Twitter about the cancellation of Thursday afternoon’s TT action, Clerk of The Course Gary Thompson MBE BEM stated:

“This afternoon’s qualifying schedule has been cancelled due to poor visibility and weather conditions.

Weather is due to improve throughout the day, so I am cautiously optimistic for tonight’s qualifying session to go ahead as per schedule.”

Present practice week pace setter, Silicone Engineering Racing’s Dean Harrison

Course conditions permitting, this evening’s line up of TT practice action, is as follows:

6:00 PM Roads close

6:20 PM Superbike/Superstock/Supersport/Newcomers practice
7:15 PM Supersport/Lightweight/Newcomers practice
7:55 PM Sidecars practice
8:40 PM TT Zero practice
9:30 PM Roads open around the TT course, except the Mountain road

Might not be a TT this year. It's possible. If they try and cram too many practices into one day, the anxiety leads to impatience which is a dangerous mix. Careful boys!

TT 2019: Full Day Of Practice Planned For Tomorrow, As Another Practice Session Falls Foul Of The Weather!
By Stevie Rial
Updated: May 30, 2019

With more annoyingly constant inclement weather curtailing Thursday evening’s practice session, event organisers are now hoping to run a full day of practice tomorrow, with competition scheduled to begin from 1:00 PM with Superbike, Superstock, Supersport class competitors, plus event newcomers opening Friday’s timed practice action.

The full current schedule (weather permitting) for Friday’s competition on the Mountain Course, is as follows:

11:15 AM Mountain Road section of TT course closes
12:30 PM Rest of the TT course closes
1:00 PM Superbike/Superstock/Supersport/Newcomers practice
2:05 PM Supersport/Lightweight/Newcomers practice
3:00 PM Sidecars practice
4:30 PM Roads around Mountain Course open, except for Mountain Road section

6:00 PM Roads close
6:20 PM Superbike/Superstock/Supersport/Newcomers practice
7:55 PM Sidecars practice
8:40 PM TT Zero practice
9:30 PM Roads around Mountain Course open, except for Mountain Road section
10:30 PM All roads around TT course open

International Roads Jedi, maestro, you name it, Smiths Racing’s Peter Hickman. He desperately needs though more track time ahead of TT 2019 race week.

As aforementioned the schedule above is weather permitting, and the event organisers like Clerk of The Course Gary Thompson MBE BEM, teams, riders in particular like the Mountain Course debutants, plus racers like Peter Hickman who is a practice session down on his respected rivals, really need the weather lords help tomorrow, to gain much, much needed track time.

Now they scramble to reschedule for track time. No Superbike Saturday, probably no Mad Sunday (where the public can ride the circuit!) This will be interesting.

TT 2019: Superbike Sunday In Prospect, Following Anticipated Race Week Schedule Alterations
By Stevie Rial
Updated: May 30, 2019

As predicted by many, the lack of track time accumulated by competitors during an ultra challenging practice week, has prompted a shake up in the TT 2019 race week schedule.

Saturday the 1st of June, originally the day intended to run the six lap RST Superbike race, will now become a day for competitors to bank track time a plenty, via practice sessions for all solo classes and the Sidecar fraternity, with action intended to get underway from 11:40 AM.

Sunday the 2nd of June, as long the schedule goes to plan, now has the honour of hosting the opening race of TT 2019, meaning that presently were on for a ‘Superbike Sunday’ treat.

Four times a Superbike TT champion, a fifth premier class TT crown on Sunday for Tyco BMW’s Michael Dunlop?

The current schedule for Saturday, Sunday’s timed practice, race action, is as follows:

Saturday:

10:15 AM Barrule Park, Ramsey-Bungalow sections of TT course closes
10:30 AM Bungalow-Creg Ny Baa section of TT course closes
11:00 AM Remainder of TT course closes
11:40 AM Superbike/Superstock/Supersport/Newcomers practice

2:50 PM Supersport/Lightweight/Newcomers practice
3:45 PM Sidecars practice
4:10 PM 1 Lap Superbike/Superstock practice
4:30 PM 1 Lap TT Zero practice
5:30 PM Roads open around TT course, apart from Mountain section
6:30 PM Remainder of TT course open

Sunday:

TT 2019: Teams, Racers Frustrated Again As Another Practice Session Is Defeated By Rain, Mist
By Stevie Rial
Updated: May 31, 2019

Once again the weather lords haven’t been on the organisers, marshals, teams, racers side today, with Friday’s afternoon’s scheduled practice session cancelled, following yet another bout of rain, mist, fog descending upon the fabled, mythical Mountain Course.

Clerk of The Course Gary Thompson MBE BEM, who has a job that not many worldwide would want at this moment in time, stated via Twitter about today’s afternoon timed practice action been null and void.

“You have probably heard already but this afternoons qualifying session, is a non-starter due to the low cloud base on the Mountain and the very wet roads all around the TT Course.

I guess at some stage it would be nice to see and hear some bikes.”

The provisional for tonight’s practice action (weather permitting), is as follows:

4:45 PM Mountain stretch of TT course closes
6:00 PM All roads around TT course close
6:20 PM Superbike/Superstock/Supersport/Newcomers practice
7:55 PM Sidecars practice
8:40 PM TT Zero practice – 1 Lap
9:30 PM Roads around TT course, except Mountain Road section opens
10:30 PM All roads round TT course open

Please weather, please give us all a much needed break! We promise the practice, race action will be spectacular, exhilarating, pulsating!

TT 2019: Despite Organisers Best Efforts, High Winds, Mist Curtails Friday Evening’s Practice Action
By Stevie Rial
Updated: May 31, 2019

Despite the best efforts of the event organisers, high winds, mist on the Mountain section of the Mountain Course, has put pay to any chance of practice action this evening at TT 2019.

Prior to practice cancellation, there was various racing insiders stating that racers could complete short laps tonight, going over the Mountain in a speed controlled fashion behind a travelling marshal.

Unfortunately this didn’t happen, and you’ve got to feel sorry for TT Clerk of The Course Gary Thompson MBE BEM, who is giving it everything in pursuit of racers gaining much needed track time.

Quattro Plant Wicked Coatings Kawasaki’s James Hillier, widely tipped to contend next week for multiple race victories.

Due to another practice session falling by the way side, Silicone Engineering Racing’s Dean Harrison remains the practice week leader across all four stroke classes.

KTS Racing’s Jamie Coward remains top of the Lightweight practice leader board, whilst John Holden/Lee Cain head the Sidecars fraternity in front of Pete Founds/Jevan Walmsley.

The current provisional schedule for Saturday’s TT competition, is as follows:

10:15 AM Mountain section of TT course closes
11:00 AM Remainder of TT course closes
11:40 AM Superbike/Superstock/Supersport/Newcomers Practice

1:10 PM Sidecars practice
2:50 PM Supersport/Lightweight/Newcomers practice
3:45 PM Sidecars practice
4:10 PM Superbike/Superstock practice – 1 Lap
4:30 PM TT Zero practice – 1 Lap
5:30 PM Roads open around TT course, excluding Mountain section
6:30 PM Remainder of TT course opens

TT 2019: Afternoon Practice Session Curtailed, Due To You Guessed It The Weather!
By Stevie Rial
June 1, 2019

Would we have luck today, would an afternoon practice session take place to allow racers to gain much needed track time, unfortunately as across recent days the answer was a resounding no.

Once again the mix of rain, low cloud, mist have put pay to any practice action this afternoon on the fabled, mythical Mountain Course.

You can’t but not feel sorry again for the event organisers, who have had everything weather wise thrown against them this week.

Speaking via Twitter about the abandonment of Saturday afternoon’s practice session, Clerk of The Course Gary Thompson MBE BEM, stated:

“Ok – weather has closed in significantly, rain is imminent. A further review at 4.00 PM, as their is a slim possibility we could get some bikes out this evening.”

All we can do now is keep our fingers crossed that timed practice takes place this evening, please, please, please weather give us all a break, the TT needs it, the organisers need it, the teams need it, the marshals need it, the racers need it.

TT 2019: Saturday Evening Practice Cancelled, Monday Race Action Planned
By Stevie Rial
Updated: June 1, 2019

Unfortunately again the good old, consistently dreary weather at TT 2019 has put pay to Saturday evening’s practice session.

Issuing an update via Twitter, about the reasons behind the abandonment of tonight’s timed practice action, a not surprisingly frustrated TT Clerk of The Course, Gary Thompson MBE BEM stated:

“Ok. Thanks for your patience, it has been a frustrating day but given the current conditions on the Mountain, I don’t think things are going to improve in time for tonight’s session, therefore tonight is cancelled and we’ll try again tomorrow. Total and utter frustration.”

Not surprisingly more changes to next weeks race schedule, have been recently announced with the RST Superbike race, opening Locate.im Sidecar race now planned to run on Monday.

One to watch next week, Market Rasen’s Phil Crowe

Tomorrow’s TT action (weather permitting again!) will now be solely practice sessions for all classes, including the TT Zero competitors who as yet have not completed any laps at TT 2019.

The current schedule for Sunday’s competition on the magical Mountain Course, is as follows:

12:00 PM Barrule Park, Ramsey to Bungalow sections of TT course closed
12:15 PM Bungalow to Creg Ny Baa sections of TT course close
12:45 PM Remainder of TT course closes

1:30 PM Superbike/Superstock/Supersport/Newcomers practice

By Stevie Rial
Updated: June 2, 2019

Three wheeling competition of the absolute highest quality was witnessed today on Manx shores, as various crews banked the minimum two laps from the practice session, which saw John Holden/Lee Cain finish quickest with a very creditable lap speed of 114.99 mph.

Lapping within just over a tenth of a second, slower than their fastest lap time from Tuesday evening, Holden/Cain despite various damp patches, gusty winds around the TT course, looked in excellent fettle

Despite various damp patches, gusty winds, it made no difference to the pace shown by the Silicone Barnes Racing duo, who combined provide a formidable mix of vast experience, race winning pedigree, raw next generation talent and ambition in abundance.

Finishing just over 0.6 of a second behind Holden/Cain, were eight times TT winners Ben Birchall/Tom Birchall.

The Birchall’s who’s outfit sports this June a colour scheme, that is reminiscent of the one used by the Mercedes AMG Formula 1 team, after a solid opening lap of just over the 113 mph mark, their ‘Flying Lap’ saw them lap at 114.93 mph.

Behind Holden/Cain, the Birchall brothers, third quickest Pete Founds/Jevan Walmsley (113.36) continues to quietly impress, as does fourth quickest duo from this afternoon’s practice action Alan Founds/Jake Lowther (110.55).

Overall 23 crews topped the 100 mph lap mark during today’s much needed practice session, whilst notable retirements included Tim Reeves/Mark Wilkes at Church Bridge, and impressive Mountain Course debutants Ryan Crowe/Callum Crowe at Snugborough.

Sidecar practice results are as follows:

TT 2019: Cummins, Harrison Set Sunday Afternoon’s Superbike Practice Pace
By Stevie Rial
Updated: June 2, 2019

To the relief of everyone involved with the TT Races, competitive action on the fabled, mythical Mountain Course returned this afternoon.

Getting underway one hour and a half behind schedule at 3:00 PM, due to the pesky mist on the Mountain, the Superbike class pace despite various damp patches, strong gusts of wind, was highly accomplished and ultra rapid.

Making the most of the track time available, Milenco by Padgetts Conor Cummins powered to the top of the premier class times sheet, securing a best lap speed of 128.92 mph.

As on Tuesday evening, the ‘Ramsey Rocket’ was quickly on the pace, and looks in an excellent frame of mind heading into tomorrow’s RST Superbike race.

Fellow pre Superbike race favourite Dean Harrison (128.29), joined Cummins in topping this afternoon the 128 mph lap mark, finishing just over five seconds behind the pace shown by the Ulster GP Superbike qualifying lap record holder.

Honda Racing’s David Johnson (128.236) was third fastest, Michael Rutter (127.55) and the exotic, great sounding Bathams-Aspire Ho supported RC213V-S Honda finished fourth quickest, whilst lead Yamaha runner, fifth fastest PreZ Racing’s Jamie Coward (127.22) also enjoyed a very productive practice session.

North West ‘Man of The Meeting’ James Hillier (125.36) finished sixth fastest, whilst reigning Pokerstars Senior TT champion Peter Hickman, standing start lap speed of 125.04 placed him 7th on the timing screens.

PRL Racing’s Sam West (124.96) finished eighth quickest, just in front of notable event returnee John McGuinness (124.72).

Jockeying the chrome liveried SG8 Norton, the 23 times TT winer stated via Manx Radio that the course conditions for practice today were the worst he has competed in, in his 20 plus years of racing around the legendary Mountain Course.

Rounding out the twelve quickest Superbike competitors this afternoon, were On 1 Racing’s Brian McCormack (124.33), Market Rasen’s Phil Crowe (124.31) and Daley Mathison (124.220).

Outside this afternoon’s ten quickest Superbike exponents, others to quietly impress included Italian star Stefano Bonetti (123.48), Paul Jordan (122.47), Buildbase Suzuki’s Jay Lawrence (122.47) and Davies Motorsport’s Dominic Herbertson (121.50).

Tyco BMW’s Michael Dunlop ended Sunday afternoon practice with no lap mileage banked, as the 18 times TT winner retired early in the session at the Mountain section of the TT course.

Practice results in full, are as follows:

1 Conor Cummins 128.923

TT 2019: Ninth TT Victory, More History, More Genius From The Birchall Bros
By Stevie Rial

The opening Locate.im Sidecar race of TT 2019, produced a mix of thrilling three wheel racing of the highest order, dramatic moments a plenty, and countless impressive lap times from a selection of the world’s finest drivers/passengers.

Lap 1:

Looking in formidable fettle, the mighty Birchall brothers race lead on the opening lap at Glen Helen, stood at just over four seconds, with fellow anticipated front runners John Holden/Lee Cain leading the challenge to the Haith supported pairing.

By Ramsey Hairpin the race lead for the Birchall’s grew to just over 5.6 seconds, Holden/Cain in second were now over ten seconds clear of Pete Founds/Jevan Walmsley, with Alan Founds/Jake Lowther, Gary Bryan/Phil Hyde and Mountain Course debutants Ryan Crowe/Callum Crowe rounding out the top six.

Ominously by the Bungalow, the Birchall’s advantage out front extended to almost nine seconds, and then by the time they made it to Cronk Ny Mona, the race lead stood at an already hard to topple 11.28 seconds margin.

At the completion of lap 1, Ben Birchall/Tom Birchall held a nigh 15 second lead over Holden/Cain, whilst the battle for third was headed by Founds/Lowther, who were just under 1.6 seconds clear of Founds/Walmsley.

Finalising the top six were the ultra impressive Crowe brothers, and the Silicone Barnes Racing supported duo of Lewis Blackstock/Patrick Rosney.

Notable retirements on lap 1 included Tim Reeves/Mark Wilkes (Bray Hill), and Dave Molyneux/Harry Payne who’s race lasted only as far as Braddan Church.

Lap 2:

The Birchall’s relentless, rapid, metronomic pace continued on lap 2 growing their race lead to plus 21 seconds at Glen Helen, then up to over 25 seconds at Ramsey Hairpin.

28 seconds clear at the Bungalow, could the Mansfield duo be about to create another piece of Mountain Course history, and set another Sidecar TT lap record.

The answer was almost but not quite, they still recorded though at the end of lap 2, an extremely impressive lap speed of 119.13 mph, almost going again under the sub 19 minute barrier.

Tenacious pursuers Holden/Cain, despite being in consistent, solid, accomplished form were 35.55 seconds behind the peerless pace setters.

Founds/Lowther courtesy of a new personal best lap speed of 116.22 mph, maintained third, but were only five plus seconds clear of Founds/Walmsley in the battle for the final place on the rostrum.

Lap 3:

Easing off their pace but only ever so slightly! Ben Birchall/Tom Birchall did all what they had to do on the third and final lap to take their tally of TT successes to nine.

Alongside becoming nine times TT winners, Locate.im Sidecar race 1 success also elevates Tom Birchall into the history book, becoming the most successful Sidecar passenger in the history of the TT Races.

48 seconds behind the all conquering Birchall brothers, were Silicone Barnes Racing’s John Holden/Lee Cain, who for the fifth successive three wheeling TT encounter, finished runners up.

Cloud Vapers backed Alan Founds/Jake Lowther kept at bay Pete Founds/Jevan Walmsley, to round out the rostrum finishers.

Ryan Crowe/Callum Crowe finished a brilliant fifth, Lewis Blackstock/Patrick Rosney clinched sixth as Gary Bryan/Phil Hyde, Conrad Harrison/Andy Winkle, Allan Schofield/Steve Thomas and Beverley father-son duo Gary Gibson/Daryl Gibson finalised the top ten finishers.

Locate.im Sidecar TT Race 1 result, is as follows:

1 Ben Birchall/Tom Birchall

4 Pete Founds/Jevan Walmsley
5 Ryan Crowe/Callum Crowe

Inevitably, we get tragic news from real roads racing. We had been spared up to this point in the season. Until now... R.I.P. Daley Mathison

A statement was issued on behalf of ACU Events Ltd, the organisers of the Isle of Man TT Races:

ACU Events Ltd regrets to confirm that Daley Mathison, 27, from Stockton on Tees, Durham was killed in an incident during the Superbike Race today at the Isle of Man TT Races. The accident occurred at Snugborough, just over 2 miles into the Course, on the 3rd lap of the race.
Daley was an experienced competitor and was seeded 19th for today’s race. He made his Mountain Course debut in the 2013 Manx Grand Prix Newcomers A Race, finishing fifth. His TT career included three consecutive podiums in the TT Zero electric bike Race in 2016, 2017 and 2018 including the runner up position in the race last year, representing Nottingham University.

He also achieved an 11th place finish in last year’s Superstock Race and a pair of 13th place finishes in the 2017 and 2018 Senior TT Races.

He set his fastest lap of the Mountain Course - 128.054mph - in the 2018 Superstock race which made him the 34th fastest rider of all time. He set the second fastest TT Zero lap ever with lap of 119.294mph in the 2018 race.

In total he started 19 TT Races with 14 finishes and 3 podiums and won 6 silver and 8 bronze replicas

ACU Events Ltd wishes to pass on their deepest sympathy to Daley’s wife Natalie, his family and friends.

His widow Tweeted...

"Not something I ever wanted to write but here we go.....

Daley, as Daisy says, is now sleeping with the fairies. That’s all I can bring myself to say right now. The last image I saw of my husband, was of a man so happy with life and so proud of his racing. xxxxxx"

Seems like she wasn't surprised by that tweet. R.i.p nevertheless.
