Please do. iRacing is made by professionals. I think JLV is very very talented at what he does but I honestly wouldn't put him as a "professional". Tell me, how much money do you make once you are the fastest mxsim player in the game? Oh yeah, $0 (unless you count the very few that got all their prizes from last year). Once you become a "pro" in iRacing, you are making your money back. And if you become a "Pro DWC" or whatever, you are making butt loads of money if you are able to do good. The reason iRacing is able to charge so much for what they are selling is because if you dedicate yourself to it, you will be making your money back. Only if you take the time of course. With Mx Sim, you don't make any money as a "top pro" rider.
Once upon a time I had a fulltime job developing levels for games and got paid for it. It was my profession, and JLV exceeds the qualifications of quite a few professionals out there.
KTM57 wrote:Maybe I should rephrase and clarify. Selling stuff for MXS in particular is a bad idea because the success of the game is built on free and open content creation and distribution. I understand that it's artwork and that game development is a career, but you're going to create more stink than the payday is worth when you sell stuff for this game.

Also, I find it kind of slimy to make money off of something built by JLV, and whether he cares or not, I'm sure that he's never seen a cent from the thousands of dollars in transactions made for content for his game.
I don't disagree, but if you can't beat them join them. I don't have enough fingers to count the guys who have made a decent chunk of change from this game for IMHO (yes biased as it may be) I've contributed an equal or greater amount. So if they can do it, why shouldn't I?

And as far as JLV not getting any cents from it, I think you'd have a tough argument to make that the free content I've produced up to this point hasn't driven him in any profits, and I'm 1000000% pumped about that. I would give JLV money all day - he's provided us a badass game and community.

You're right. I said it was a bad idea, and this is exactly why... because once others are doing it and making something from it, others will feel the need to follow suit. Frankly, I want to buy a new bike model, in the past I would wait for the release and repay that track creator with my track releases. Since the model I want won't be released and is being sold, I need to sell some tracks to raise the money to buy it.

He understands if it weren't for the creators it would not be where it is at today. Selling stuff for this game is pointless, their are to many disrespectful little brats that will just hand it around to all their butt buddies. Like you said, it would be more of a stink than worth it. Now the idea of subscriptions/donations to unlock early beta's, exclusive content, and/or racing is not a bad idea imo.

I was more getting at the fact of the money people spend for that game, when at the same time people say "it's only a game blah blah I'm not spending money". What is a fee of $60 dollars to race or get a track early, when you spend $10 per car (I think? not sure), or $400+ on a wheel setup, or $2k plus on a computer worthy of it, etc etc.

As KTM said though, as you can see we don't have the community for it. Yes, the community was founded upon free content, but things can't stay the same forever and the way the communities persona is, it has defiantly changed. There is a reason you do not see the top creators releasing much these days, for free at that.

By the way Riley, if I wanted to just give the track to my "homeboys" I'd start with my team. Second of all, it's my track right? So I can do waht I want with it? But I don't like JAG that much, just was in there last night with them to play the beta.

m121c wrote:Yes because selling your hard work is "retarded", please go and tell me what is different between selling something "in real life" and "just a video game". As far as I'm concerned video games have well made it into everyday life and can make someone a lot of money. You have your youtubers, creators, and heck players in the x games now. They actually have colleges for video game development, you can't just sit here and say "it's so stooopid because it's just a game". What is sad is we pay for entertainment in our everyday lives all the time, but yet are so against paying for entertainment that is for "just a video game" that people put hours of work into.

Hypocritically enough, some of you bitching are so try hard at video games it's not even funny, I don't see why you haven't actually tried paying for the betas already. What is $60 to you when you have most likely have a $2k computer you are playing your video games on with mostly likely $100+ headset for "sick audio quality bro" and don't even get me started if you play iRacing.

THIS.
Couldn't have said it better myself.

I personally think its dumb to get the track like 3 days early, but who cares if they sell tracks early ? If people wanna sell their stuff then let em, its there content.

Oh the drama! Gotta love a classic haves vs have not's battle. Here you either sit in Teamspeak waiting patiently to pat Chris on the back, or you don't. Tough decision.

If you're going to try and sell your shit under the guise of being available to everyone and fairly then you need to setup a website, and not have them come begging to you in a teamspeak server. My personal opinion of course.

Exactly. By the time we've found out that it's an option to buy the track, it's gone down at least 20% in worth because it's a full day later. If you're going to leak things, at least advertise them!

Just want to get myself on record that I think releasing the track early (for money or not) is dumb. The are Chris's tracks so he can do what he wants with them though.

Carry on.
