How do I get Gear Textures?

Hey guys,
so I've become alright at skinning and have made myself a few gear sets
but is what i really want to know is how i get the actual gear textures?
if your not sure what i mean,

I'm guessing its just something simple like in pattern overlay or something but even if someone could link me to a post that has a tut on this?
