Name and number on Jersey help

No matter what I do I cannot figure out how to put my name and number on the back of a jersey. I have the .png file for the gear. When ever I try to edit it I cannot get the lettering to show up. (I was told to use GIMP). If someone knows what I am doing wrong, please help. Thanks
