"Photo was flat" and "black and white" don't belong in the same sentence. Black a white thrives on contrast sine it doesn't have colors to do that. A flat black and white shot isn't good for anything really.

You may want to reread that because I have never heard of that. This photo is my favorite of this topic and possibly the best B&W moto shot I've ever seen. Besides the timing of the shot the contrast between white and black make it really interesting. Only thing I wish was different is the people in the stand were slightly blurred but the contrast for this type of shot was spot on.

Only time I really do black and white is to show emotion in the photo. I know it sounds weird, but it just fits with those types of photos. I also like to go with B&W if the lighting on the subject is one sided. Here's a few examples of mine..
