It's been about a year since I solved one, but for a common 3x3 I think there are less than 10 algorithms needed to solve it.

I've got a 4x4 rubik's cube and I can't fucking solve it even with a solution walkthrough in front of me.

4x4's definitely raise the difficulty exponentially. My one [rubik's fanatic] friend tried to show me how to solve a 4x4 once and there were just too many algorithms to try and remember without lots of practice. He does 5x5's as well.

I know him as Todd Krieg, he lives real close to me, and I've seen him at a fair amount of local races. He was actually at my good friends house a few weeks back who has a bomb track in his yard.
