They're not spikes, they are more like a 3/16" deep sheet metal screw.

It's like riding on the most prime loamy dirt you could possibly imagine. It slides a little bit but once it settles in you have more traction that on any other surface, until you hit snow, then you have none. You can't really see the crash, but you can see the tire track through the snow that caused it...
