Hello,
One thing I would love to try in a mx game is dual stick controls, where one controls the front wheel turning, and the other one controls the lean. Reflex is nice the way it does dual sticks, but it's obviously not modelled onto a realistic physics engine. The one sensation of riding a bike that Ive never eperienced in a motocross game is true counter-steering / powersliding whatever it is.
This is what I'm talking about > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uz197-CZDSY
Laying it over, opposite steering, and drifting around corners... There was a track that I used to ride when I was younger, that had a steep uphill, offcamber, right hand turn, and I could lay the bike down quite easy like in the video, and powerslide up the hill. I was a child when I did this, so I had no idea really what I was doing, and whether or not it was faster, but it felt cool, I wasn't slow, but importantly, it felt stable. This is something that video-game bike physics, has never captured in my experience.
So this is more a personal "letter" to JLV really, asking whether this is something he's considered for MX Sim? I would also be interested to hear whether this is actually possible with the current physics model, and whether it's just a case of mapping the controls to the physics... If it really is as easy as that, I would love more than anything to test out what it feels like in the game.
I recently looked into coding my own mx game, and I've come to the conclusion that coding is just not my thing, so I've got huge respect for what you've done here. I hope this is taken into consideration, because I feel this would be a very natural and realistic control mechanic.
Cheers
Jamie

Re: Dual Stick Physics
It might be on his list but it's not top priority...
Maybe in X years we'll have this

Then you'd lose analogue control for two of your inputs. RIght now I've got throttle/rear brake mapped to the right stick, and clutch/front brake mapped to the triggers. If the right stick controlled lean then you'd have just on/off controls for things you really need to be analogue. Honestly, I don't really think it's necessary.

Hmmm I see... I like that you are mapping those controls to the analogue to give the full sim effect
but would it make a huge difference to have front brake on anti-lock, and the clutch on digital too? Forgive me, because I'm just getting into this game, but is it really that important to have those as analogue?
I'm really interested to hear whether the physics is coded to handle such a control system as this, so hopefully jlv can shed some light soon
cheers

Re: Dual Stick Physics
I have my controls setup that I could have the second joystick setup for this without losing any important analog controls. I have triggers as front brake and gas, and a button for rear brake bc I rarely use it. But I think this would make the game even harder and more complicated to play. It definitely is possible to do some rowdy counter-steering powerslides as it is. Just watch any highlight videos or demos from a serious organized race. Phat's TT series, especially, provides a lot of flat tracking.
