I haven't watched any GP races, but is Herlings being pushed his limits the entire race in the season? This whole season Barcia and Baggett were pushed beyond their limits sometimes for the entire 35 minute moto.
I think their fitness will be evenly matched.
GP's are 35 +2 so 40 minutes if you will and absolutely I think Jeffrey was sprinting the entire time. Herlings is kinda like the Barcia of Europe in my opinion. Highly touted amateur who proved how good he was when he won his first GP when he was only 15! He has crazy style, scrubs a lot and is always moving on the bike, and is still a little too immature to know when slower is faster.
Herlings won both Motos at his home race at Valkenswaard this year. Fastest lap time? 1.45 consistently in the 1.46s... the next fastest 250 rider? Searle 1.51 consistently slower than that... Fastest 450 rider on the day? Cairoli 1.48.. Yeah six time world champion Cairoli not even within striking distance of a guy on a bike with less power IN THE SAND.
Herlings won both Motos like Puma said at Lierop by oh only 2 minutes or so. He lapped EVERYONE except 2nd and 3rd twice! No way in hell is he just kicking it and doing that and if he is then god help us all. Then you look at a hard packed race like Matterly Basin in GB. Searle holeshot both Motos, Herlings rode his rear fender the entire Moto both times, fell once at the end and couldn't make it happen the other time. Both he and Searle had to be full sprint for 40 minutes otherwise one of them would have gotten away from the other.
Plus! This track really isn't too far from Herlings' home. I think if Herlings went to say Unadilla or Blue Diamond that Barcia would probably have a stern upperhand over Jeffrey being that he knows the surface like the back of his hand. I feel it can easily be turned around for Lommel, Lierop, Valkenswaard, etc. in Herlings favor.
Look, I will be cheering on Barcia just as much as anyone in America cause I still want them to win and (btw Mike [Garro] none of this is really directed at you I'm just ranting now)...
But anyway, this topic I knew would fire up my biggest pet peeve about American MX fans.. I once said in Vent a while ago that it was cool to go to Glen Helen when they had the GP here and be able to walk straight into the pits and talk to some of the best riders in the world. I was deeply frustrated when someone (and I won't say who) responded "Hahaha best riders in the world, hardly".. Kidding me? Seriously both series FIM and AMA are stacked with very talented riders. Recent Examples: Desalle shows up in 2010 at Unadilla and goes 2-2 and led for some of the second Moto from Dungey//// Osborne finished top 5 in the Lites West in 2012.. still finishes ONLY top 5 after going back to Europe, exact same results//// Pourcel nearly wins the Lites championship over here loses to Canard who we can agree is a serious threat in the 450 class right? Pourcel finished 4th in a full season in 450s in Europe, yeah he was hurt once or twice but he wasn't BLAZINGLY faster than Cairoli hardly ever.. /// Max Anstie has had a rough go of it over there but almost won the SD Supercross in the Lites Class in 2010..
I guess my point is take a step back and look at it for a minute. In the last lets say five years, three Americans have raced full time in Europe. Albertson, Leib, Osborne. Good riders but not Americas best. Europe has sent Searle, Townley, Pourcel, Roczen, Musquin, Paulin, Anstie, Swanepoel and tons more!(yes i know Townley and Swanepoel aren't European but they were they before they came to America) And then there's a ton of back lash because it takes Roczen god forbid ten rounds to finally get a moto win after leading so many laps and finishing on the podium so many times. Or Pourcel was never that good he just lucked into ALMOST winning two titles. etc. etc. etc.
I love the Americans, I am an American and when it comes to des Nations I will always root for the Americans.. but I will also always fight that the World Championship produces just as good if not sometimes better riders than the USA. Hopefully you guys can at least understand where I'm coming from and realize that I'm not personally attacking anyone just some built up frustration over why SOME American fans try to push away the European influx when all they are trying to do is make it so that they too can be referred as the best in the world. Europeans love their riders to death but they also love Americans just as much. I think America could do the same. /rant over
