I haven't looked into game engines that much but Unreal Engine 4 is 19$/month +5% of gross revenue and CryEngine is 9.90$/month. Maybe you can just subscribe for one month and then re-subscribe when there's an update that would be useful.

Back on topic.
IMO 16bits even for editing is overkill for skins in MXS. 8bits is enough since I'm pretty sure 95% of the skinners don't have a color calibrated monitor anyway.
The only reasons I'd use 16bits for MXS are for black and white gradient that I'd use for normal maps and terrains obviously.

There is hardly any visible change and the files size can be reduced about 40%. That means the game needs less memory to load all the textures and the textures takes less hdd space as well.
Actually, the game immediately converts textures to 8 bits/channel when it loads them so saving at 8 bits/channel won't save texture memory. It will load faster and save disk space though. I'd recommend trying indexed mode too. Most of the time it looks fine and saves a lot of space too.

oh, didn't know that. anyway it still saves space on hdd, so will be nice if people keep that in mind.
Indexed color mode sure could save even more space, I'm just not sure how much people here know how to save it properly

Bumping this before the onslaught of 800MB national team packs and 200MB team pack add-ons come.

Best bump ever. After DL'ing 7GB of things for the stream on the sx season, it would be nice with smaller packs...

I got a track down from 173mb to 73mb by optimizing most of the images (uploaded them to tinypng.com though).
