Niklas Sandbox MX 2.0 - 3D scanning on next level
Hi there,
like promised, here is the new 3D scanned track. This time I made the track bigger and put more work into the environment (custom statues), ground traction, skybox and billboards.
I don't totally fixed the "out of virtual memory" problem, but when you start with compability graphic settings, this should be no matter.
Last but not least, I managed to put everything into a .saf, so don't worry about messed up folders...

I can ride a 1000 laps and still try to beat my personal best.
Very good job, this track really brings the fun to a game like this.

That makes me wounder.
If its possible to just mount a camera on a quadcopter (drone) with FPV system and fly over a real track and take photos.
It wont be more accurate that in smallscale but in theory it would work.

Re: Niklas Sandbox MX 2.0 - 3D scanning on next level
Very cool and props for trying something new.
A few things. I'm not a huge fan of the traction, and while the extra details in the terrain are what makes this so badass to me, it is going to take a good traction to make them really work. I bet a slight (very subtle) gausian blur on the terrain would make it even better. It wouldn't change how it rides, just get rid of some of the weirdness that sometimes happens on bumps/edges.
As far as performance, a rough offtrack really, really tasks a computer. Again, a blur to smooth it would really help out with performance.Focus the details on the track, not off.
The decals via photo are definitely next level, I'd only imagine what could be done to make them even better from someone who is talented with texturing.
You did a great job on the environment as well. Wonderful stuff.
To make a bigger track would be quite simple. Build everything in your sandbox smaller/tighter and crank your terrain.hf number. You are at a detail level of 1 pixel = .35 feet. Anything up to 1 pixel = 1 foot (3 times where you are at) is great detail. Your texture wouldn't be any larger, just scaled over a larger area as well.
Hopefully some ideas to keep taking this concept further. And again, nothing but a huge pat on the back and congratulations from me.

Re: Niklas Sandbox MX 2.0 - 3D scanning on next level
I'm sorry for the big size, but the ground texture (overall 16k) is killing that. I am not an expert on friction ad stuff, but I wanted thet it feels like reel sandbox sand. I copyed some values from james stuart compound, because I thought thit will cover a sand feeling best. I am opened, if someone posts a friction setup (I need one for the white sand, and for the brown sand with a liddle bit better traction)
Re: Niklas Sandbox MX 2.0 - 3D scanning on next level
Here is what was used on red bud and millville which is a lighter sand feeling except at slow speeds it's probably too grippy.
friction 0.9 0
friction 0.75 0.1
friction 0.98 1.5
friction 1.07 7
friction 1.12 50
roll_resist 20.0 35.0 15.0
roll_resist 50.0 45.0 25.0
Here is Shale Valley, a deep sand track:
friction 0.4 0
friction 0.5 2.0
friction 1.0 3.0
friction 1.2 10.0
roll_resist 20 50 0
roll_resist 70 100 30
As far as the size, it'll help if you .rar or atleast .zip the fiile to compress it. WinRar or 7zip are free and allow you to do this.

definetly different. but in a good way! really fun. and I know its a sandtrack but I actually like the traction the way it is! it just feels better the way it is to me.

Re: Niklas Sandbox MX 2.0 - 3D scanning on next level
Yeah its pretty old technology, but not the kind your average person has. They actually use it for most of the rf outdoor tracks. Obviously they use free data so the depth is like 5m or something. It'd cost if you wanted better depth detail.mecke96 wrote:That makes me wounder.
