MxSim on linux on a ps3
you can install linux OS on a ps3 (for those of you who dont know) so my question is does anyone have linux on their ps3 and run this game on it? im actually curious now that i got reminded from looking at a snapshot that its also supported on linux. it would be nice if possible. i might try it once i get done moving next week. as powerful as the system is there should be no problem running large gates.
Re: MxSim on linux on a ps3
I didn't know ps3's could use different OSs
. Would be pretty cool if it worked, I don't have a ps3 but still cool nonetheless.

Re: MxSim on linux on a ps3
At the minimum it would require a recompile. It would probably need some other work too although I wouldn't expect any huge problems.
The thing that sucks about PS3 Linux is the GPU is disabled. So the only OpenGL acceleration is from the Cell processor.

Re: MxSim on linux on a ps3
well technically there is NO OS on a ps3. theres a XMB (cross media bar). but thats not really an OS, its just live a 360's desktop. adding an OS turns it in to a computer. you can attach a printer to it also and it has built in WiFi so its good anywhere. if i can get this to work (maybe with the help of jlv) ill put up a tutorial if anyone wants to give it a try (so you can play it on your TV without having the transfer the image from a computer) the most widely used one is yellow dog. does yellow dog disable the GPU jlv? i know there are 3 or 4 versions that work on it so maybe all dont do that?
Re: MxSim on linux on a ps3
I believe they disable the GPU because it would mess up their royalty scheme if you could run unrestricted games on Linux. So the GPU will be disabled for everything.

Re: MxSim on linux on a ps3
i also did some digging about that. its also to save their asses from people trying to run Windows and OSX on a sony product.
installing linux 6.1 yellow dog right now. if anyone finds this i did find something out the hard way. the system you have determines the type of linux you get. if you have a 20gb or 60gb system (older ones, like me) you have to get a specific version for it. same goes for the 80gb abd 160gb systems. each "generation" has its own version. i know for yellow dog the 20/60 is the 2008 build and the 80/160 is the 2009 build (will have that number in the title when you download). right now they have a 6.2 version out but its only for the newer systems. im leaving for class now so when i get back ill muck around with it and try to get MXSIM running by tonight/tomorrow hopefulle. although i have a final on thursday and a lot of HW so it might not happen.

I don't even own a ps3 and I'm extremely eager to see if this works. Keep us updated man.aFACEdismemberd wrote:i also did some digging about that. its also to save their asses from people trying to run Windows and OSX on a sony product.

Re: MxSim on linux on a ps3
ok well writing a tutorial for how to do this will actually be very hard, ill try and do it if enough people ask for it. i dont have mxsim on there yet. i had to use 4 or 5 forums and some smart computer knowledge to get some things to work. i found a page by page walk through for 5.1 yellow dog but its now up to 6.1 (for the 20/60gb models) so a few things were different. thats where google came in to play. getting WPA network keys to work for wireless internet is a tricky process but i know how to do it now. WEP you will have no problem. if you dont know what im talking about, dont even try haha. i can give you guys the link to the guide and you can just PM me if you want. unfortunately unless i get ahead of schedule tomorrow studying i wont be trying this until at earliest thursday night (roughly 48 hours from this post).
Re: MxSim on linux on a ps3
I dont know why, but i felt like resaerching this, and i found a website that might give you exactly what you need:
http://us.fixstars.com/support/installation/
I dont know what version you want to download onto your PS3, but there's the three versions on there, when you click one of the options under Installing YDL it gives you a guide in .pdf form.
Hope it helps.

Re: MxSim on linux on a ps3
already have it on there buddy but thanks. and that is the website i got yellow dog from. theres some things on their forums though that are a needle in a haystack to find like the trick for getting encryption working so you can use WPA security for wireless. as of right now it wont happen. jlv would have to recompile MXS to run off of a different parameter. if he says yes, we might have a little project for the community. if he says no, well theres nothing i can do. i have linux on my ps3, it runs and its waiting for a recompiled MXS (if that ever happens). thats as far as it will get for at least a week or two (ill be without internet for that period).
i just think it would be cool to be able to play MXS on a "console". theres a possibility it could be widescreen though. yellow dog only outputs in 720p or above. that doesnt mean the game HAS to be widescreen... but it would be pretty freaking sweet. id even play one player in HD if thats the most it could run.

Re: MxSim on linux on a ps3
there was also a rumor that some guys were purposely messing with linux to find a way to get to the GPU and did, but sure enough... sony released a firmware update and it was no longer possible. sony trying to stop them or just dumb luck from sony? you decide.
Re: MxSim on linux on a ps3
This would be sick if it could work, i think im getting a PS3 soon and i have WiFi and then i could play online lol
