in my opinion anytime you buy a pre-built you are getting ripped off.
Building your own is actually really easy it is pretty much plug in and go.
Here would be some other good options:
http://pcpartpicker.com/guide/VJnTwP/60 ... rst-timers
http://pcpartpicker.com/guide/cdbtt6/60 ... 80p-gaming
These dont come with windows but if you know someone in college they will be able to get it to you at a nice discount.

$600 is rough unless you are willing to build. Even then its really tight. I know puma has a build that he has posted a few times at that price point, that would be my recommendation.

If what you are looking for is that formfactor you can't build anything that small. However, what you are buying there and the claim to 1080p isn't out of reach but its not upfront completely. Essentially you are buying a laptop, this unit ($600) has a laptop i3 and a ~860M and for $600 its not terrible but for $600 you could get more. Its possible to do 1080p at about Med settings on current games and it comes with a X360 controller so if you wanted something for your TV/living room to play steam games on its pretty fit for the job.

However, if you want something on for your desk and it will be doing anything, ever, other than playing games it will not be the best use of your money. I think I saw you wanting to do tracks and skins and a laptop CPU/GPU will drag miserably doing workload task like that. A desktop i3/960 is by no means going to set the world on fire either but it is better.

I built my first computer my Sophomore year and thought I knew about computers. Come join the club.

For $600, prebuilt, and workstation/1080p gaming is going to be really tough to find. My suggestion is keep an eye on a prebuild website for a big sale and hope for the best.

Or buy the cheapest prebuilt system with an i5 that you can find and spend the rest on a GPU and PSU if necessary. I think that is the way to go for "prebuilt" although its not much harder to do the rest I guess.

The problem with "gaming" prebuilts is that I swear a 12 year old picks the components and they always skimp on the most important part...The GPU.

If you just get on YouTube and find computer whiz channels (LinusTechTips, JayzTwoCents, Tek Syndicate, Tech Of Tomorrow, Paul's Hardware, etc.) and watch their videos of build guides and build logs over and over, you will know how to build a computer. I didn't know shit about computers until about 6 months before becoming dedicated to build mine, and, through Linus and Jay's channels alone, I was able to build a "solid" AMD build with almost no snags during the building process. While I don't exactly recommend going the way of AMD, they are less expensive processors that get the job done. If you're like me and wear a headset almost every time you're in your computer, then there won't be a problem. But, I did notice that the stock fan on my FX-6350 was always really loud and annoying, so I picked up a Hyper 212 Evo and fixed that problem.

If you had a better graphics card in that first link, it'd probably be almost perfect. But, I personally, would not spend money on a 1 gb GPU. During outdoors, you probably have to run your stuff decently low in order to have any skins and have a decent frame rate. If you can muster the money, I think I'd get the first computer and then buy this or this They are the same gpu with different amounts of vram. The second would be better and since it's only $20 dollars more, I personally would suggest it. The only problem there is that the pre build doesn't have enough juice in the power supply, so you'd have to buy and install a new one (which other then wire management isn't hard) and I would suggest this power supply
