Server on Raspberry Pi?
Hi guys!
I've always wanted to have my own 24/7 server in my living room. Since a PC (my old cheapo one) makes a little bit of noise and generates quite some head and all, I just got up my eyes for Raspberry Pi for this purpose. So my only question is really if it has enough hardware to steadily run 1-5 Mx Sim servers simultaneously. From a guess, I assume that Raspbian is compatible to run it, since it's a Linux based OS.
Just wanted to check in so it's not 40$ straight into the trash bin, in case that I order one.

Running 5? No. As far as running 1 goes I'm not entirely sure what MXS servers are more dependent on. As I think about it, I don't know much kept server side so maybe it could run 1 large player server or 2 small player servers depending on your internet speeds.

My internet speed is currently 100 Down and 10 Up. Also I'm thinking of getting the Raspberry Pi 2 Model 2, if that matters, so 900 MHZ quad-core CPU with 1GB ram

Re: Server on Raspberry Pi?
Elsinore is a 1.8 GHz Atom, and the mxserver processes only use a couple percent of that. So I expect it'd be fine as far as processing power. The real problem is the Raspberry Pi isn't x86 compatible so you'd need an mxserver binary compiled for 32 bit ARM, which doesn't exist right now.
Intel's Compute Stick would do the job.

Oh yeah... x86. Intel compute stick would be nice to have, but it's a little over my budget atm. I guess I'll just proceed the idea of turning my old computer into a server. Thanks for the info JLV!

Re: Server on Raspberry Pi?
I read somewhere that there was an emulator for the pi that can run x86 programs on raspian. Not sure if its legit or not though. However, I run my web server off of my model B its very handy. I might look into that emulator more but I run all my sim servers on my game server pc.

I read that too! But for a server, it's important that it isn't laggy/sluggish? Also Pi 2 should get a certain windows 10 support.LKR47 wrote:I read somewhere that there was an emulator for the pi that can run x86 programs on raspian. Not sure if its legit or not though. Re: Server on Raspberry Pi?
I only have the first gen pi. The pi 2 is quad core running at 900mhz with 1gig or ram so Im sure 1 or 2 small servers wouldnt lag, if at all not noticeably. If you have a pi Id say give it a try.

I don't have one (yet). If it would straight up have run a server, I'd bought one. Now I'm a little insecure, not really sure if I could have any other use for it.

Re: Server on Raspberry Pi?
The pi zero was just release. It is $5 USD and it has 40% more processing power than the original pi and half the size of a credit card. It has an arm11 processor I think. They are all sold out now everywhere but once they restock that would be a very inexpensive way to test it out. Cant go wrong with a $5 computer even if you cant run a server off of it.

Wow 5$, I'll order one for sure. Guess I'll have to do some research about the x86 emulator. 5$, get a pc for less than a pizza.

This would work better for you. It Pi's newest competition.

Re: Server on Raspberry Pi?
It took a while for me to test this (sorry). There is a program called ExaGear, seems to be the only application for the Raspberry Pi that emulates the x86 assembly. It was like $20-ish USD...I bought it a while ago so I don't really remember how much it was exactly. I installed it on raspbian an started a sim server with it and had some friends connect. It worked very well actually with the one server running, but as I started to put up more, they all started going slo-mo as the Pi doesnt have a whole lot of processing power.
So in conclusion, Id say for one small server it would be perfectly fine.
If you want to test it here is a written tutorial - http://www.cnx-software.com/2015/11/12/ ... h-exagear/

Re: Server on Raspberry Pi?
Seems decent then, I guess? I actually pre-ordered one of the pine's that Puma linked above. I went with the expensive version, but no wifi+bluetooth upgrade. Should arrive at latest in May. We'll see..
