When I launch the game I get the menu screens to set everything up but then when I click on start game (or whatever it says) i get an mx.exe error and i get booted back to my desktop.
This is the full version and I just bought it this morning. I'm running XP Pro is that means anything.

Make sure you're running the latest reference drivers for your graphics card. If you're running an ATI card try disabling Catalyst AI.
