Detonating the motor

Post by Ballsfalsky »

This just came to mind a few minutes ago. In real life, your bike will eventually blow up from:
-improper maintenance (does not relate to MXS).
-worn parts (does not relate to MXS).
-BEING ON THE REV LIMITER TO MUCH!
-and many other reasons.

I believe that there should be a certain amount of time that we can be on the rev limiter, say... 25-30 seconds a race, and then once that timer hits 0.00, the engine loses all power, rear end locks up (to simulate being seized)and the idle goes silent (does not run). I think that this would add a bit more realism to the game, and teach those overly rev happy riders to kind of tame it down a little and use the gears. I'm not sure on how hard this would be to add into the game, but I think it would be cool to see.

DO IT, that way jlv and I will be the only ones on the track at the end of races.

I don't plan on doing bike damage ever. I don't want to piss off any motorcycle companies.

I understand what you mean, although, it IS a simulator, and the bikes themselves dont say "YAMAHA" or "KTM" on there anywhere (in the bike selection) i.e 2009 crf250.

Derp. Why do bikes blow up from being on the rev limiter? Well, first off, they don't...but if it were to blow up during a race it would be caused by something other than a timer. Overheating, running too lean, part failure due to excessive stress, all of these things would need to be simulated in order to have engine failures. Often times, engine failures aren't occurring within the amount of time our races last, and if they do it's because they are modified engines running near the edge in terms of reliability. You said it yourself, maintenance and wear doesn't apply to MXS, and I've just shown you that when riding a stock bike, like the ones in MXS, engine failure during a 20 minute race is unheard of, regardless of engine abuse.

I have many other reasons this will never happen if you'd like to hear them.

An idea I could get behind is overheating causing a loss of power. But once again, in the races we run, it's just not likely to happen. I've boiled the brakes on my bikes many times in the past, it's still not something that I want added to a video game. Honestly, for me at least, any simulator should come prefaced with BCS (best case scenario) making the game we all love BCSMXS.

revving your bike out like that (rev limiter) puts HUGE stress on the valve train. I know numerous people who have dropped a valve because of being overly rev happy. What happens is the valves start to float, the valve spring doesent know what to do, valve spring breaks and send shreds of valve and spring throughout the motor, causing detonation.

First off when you try to make a arguement or bold statement make sure it is correct..

Valve float is not caused by a rev limiter it is rather caused by too high of RPM period. A rev limiter is set in place as a prevention device, it is not a device provided to tell the operator your valves are floating. Droping a valve from what I have seen is 9/10 caused by a worn out spring that breaks under heavy operation.

Now here is the correct term Detonation is not when broken parts make there way into the cylinder.. Two scenario's or what we mechanics like to call a root cause. A) You have too low of octane and the air fuel mixture is igniting before the piston reaches top dead center creating knock which is when the piston force on the piston against the cylinder wall as the explosion is jarring the piston on uptravel instead of downtravel. B) Second scenario is too much timing in the engine causing extreme heat on the piston crown and causes abrasions on the piston. These are two examples I could give you more but its time to get some work done..

Detonating the motor? no.....

But something should be done about people who slam their bikes in to 1st gear after going 5th wide open down a straight away.

I've had one four stroke engine fail on me since 2002. In the 9 years before that I had a minimum of 20 engine failures, all of them during races....

How the eff do you blow a 2-stroke? :|

Only engine failures I've got were a broken piston ring and a cold seizure thanks to the steel sleeve I put in my 125.

I've blown my yz125 up twice and I've only had it a year and a half. I guess I ride it to hard. 8)

blow up a 2 stroke: piston and wrings. Maybe a cylinder.
Blow up a 4 stroke: re-mortage your house, and re-finance your vehicles.

125' are pushing alot of power for their size. that could be due to improper jetting, or maybe even mixing the fuel to lean. I use Opti-2 (its actually very good oil) and I mix it at (depending on where im riding) between 40 and 50:1. Its such a concentrated premix oil that you dont need as much to properly lubricate the motor.
