Pledging money for new bike sounds

Post by FlyinHigh »

I believe I've heard someone talking about this idea before but I just wanted to see peoples thoughts on this. Since clearly jlv doesn't have enough money to go get actual real life bike dyno sounds. Would anyone be interested in pledging a few dollars for this? I don't know how much this would cost jlv to do, but over 12,000 people have bought this game and I know at LEAST 25-50% of them are active players. So if around that many people each pledge somewhere around 3-5 dollars we could easily have enough money for this project. You guys were capable of clicking a button for a total of 1,000+ times for a model, how about some pocket change for something we all want? Seriously, i know everybody on here wants to slam some real sounding rev limiters, because i know I do

I wouldnt because theres other things Id rather have before new sounds. Not that new sounds wouldnt be welcomed though.
Scripting and mesh collisions/new bike collisions is something worth paying for IMO. Oh and dem shadows JLV. 8)

Yeah no doubt that would be cool, but i mentioned this because it actually requires a lot of money to be able to do. The other stuff is just scripting and redesigning of the game and such. Idk though, for me i just really want to play this game and hear a real bike, would be so dope

I would drop money in a heartbeat for authentic sounds. Sound of motocross is like half the reason why motocross is so cool in the first place. I think it would be pretty welcome considering the theory more people probably play this game because of authentic models and graphics for bikes. Not too crazy to me to think more people would play the game if the sounds were spot on as well, right?

I don't know about everyone else but I'm so used to collision not being perfect that I haven't been bothered by it in a long time and would just rather have realistic braaps and be excited about mesh collision another time.

Does anyone have a fair estimate on the cost needed for the sounds? Start a kickstarter funding page.

I'm not sure, I thought JLV said around 5,000 however I could be completely wrong  JLV can we get some confirmation on a price?

You mean for a third party? I'm not sure about the price. Greg Hill would probably be the guy to go to but I couldn't guess what he charges. I'd like to take another shot at it myself once I've run out of projects. I have a bad case of NIH.

Fixed your reasoning. Those small bores get the best of us.

That KTM is distracting!

BTW just in case someone isn't aware of the term "NIH", it means "Not Invented Here".

Giving away some age there jlv.
NIH seems to have died with any programmer born after 1990 - copy and paste generation is alive and well :-(

I usually like my own code better since it fits what I need exactly and there are no surprises where something doesn't work as documented or I misunderstand the docs. It also means less dependencies which is always a good thing. Sometimes it really is just reinventing wheels though.

I almost think it was easier to learn programming back in the 80's than it is now. Computers were meant to be programmed back then. Now they're more like appliances.

I think it's more like, you really needed to learn about computers to be able to program back then. Now you can piece snippettes together and call yourself a programmer...
And worst of all, then we employ these new gen programmers, and wonder why they take forever to (or simply cannot) debug.
Anyways - old man rant over!
