sync personal foders with bittorrent

Post by al167 »

I just brought rfactor 2 and guys are syncing there packages folder (same as our personal folder) automatically using a program called bit torrent sync.
http://labs.bittorrent.com/experiments/sync.html
it automatically syncs your personal folder and worked a treat and with a few clicks I was on my way to downloading 10gb of tracks/skins ect.(hundreds and hundreds)

heres the link to rfactor forums.http://isiforums.net/f/showthread.php/7 ... -(torrent)

im Shure this could easily be applied to mxs for bikes and skins using the same method. im not Shure how secure it is but im going to try and set it up with a few friends.

But theres a few hurdles like your config and reg key are in there and you don't want to sync those...

this would be cool if it got done securely and properly with help from jlv(maybe need to sort the personal folder into sub catagories or something)

positives- should be able to see all skins/bikes and will dl automatically.
negatives- will reduce forum interaction on download pages and people wont appreciate the creators work as much.

what do you guys think?

I think this could be something really useful, if it can be adapted. Your negative listed isn't really that accurate, at least from my perspective, as people will still have to come here to download it in the first place. I think something like this, but perhaps a little closer to how LFS does it (for skins) would be better.

This would definitely be nice for tracks!

Oh, well it will never work here. The egos of some will get in the way of this idea if they dont receive the stroking they deserve.

I'd rather have it only download what it needs instead of syncing everything that's ever been made.

Also I put most stuff in my install folder, tracks in install? As they take more room (it on my HDD). And skins and the rest in my personal folder. It limits the amount of space it takes up on my MUCH smaller SSD. Plus I like to choose what I download.

jlv, would there be a problem with syncing the install folder? is there something in there that shouldn't be shared? or if someone had an old version would it overwrite new mx.exe? im thinking of having tracks, models, skins in my install folder, then using my personal folder for my own custom tracks, skins ect(until released). that might get around sharing the reg file and A Woods problem.

I definitely don't want the zzz*.saf files shared.

If mx.exe has to write to it, put it in your personal folder. Otherwise either will work.

If you´d share like that, wouldn´t virus be pretty bad? Like everyone gets infected?

I already created this software for our french community, MXS-Concept.com .
I'm currently developping a "general" version of this software, wich will be compatible with all communities, and also compatible with other games, not only MX Simulator. It will be multilingual.

Check it : http://mxs-concept.com/2013-09/lapplica ... -devoilee/

- You select where is your personal folder, for guys who changed the path.
- You can select only what you want to download, and if a folder or a saf change it automatically detect the change and re-downlod the new version.
- You can open directly your personnal folder, demos folder, setups folder
- You can watch you own livetiming if your community have one (like EMF, MXS Central, etc) in an epured format
- You can imagine access to the Admin tab 8)
- You can donate 8)

Soon, you'll be able to automatically sync every N hours and limit the bandwith, not to lag if you're ingame.

What do you think about it, guys ?

PS : don't come on our servers please, your UIDs will be banned 8)

PS2 : all you'll need is a FTP server, where the admin put what he wanna sync. He got an admin panel to do this. No regkey and config files shared anymore

hey mx4ever, that ap looks really good!, would you be keen to set it up for the general community?
I just checked, bittorrent sync, and it can be set up to sync from one folder. and you can also make it so it excludes files. but your app sounds better, although torrentsync would allow everyone to share the uploading bandwidth.

Also, PSP is faster but less appreciated.
