Idk i didn't realize i had it up that high when i was riding, just like how i don't realize i have one finger on my front brake when i ride, it's just a habbit i guess.

The only thing truly "wrong" with it is that its a waste of energy. I have a buddy whos super fast and he does the same thing just maybe not quite as much. Try to work on keeping it a little lower and it should start to help your stamina.
