maybe multiple UID grabs are necessary for events of this magnitude? I expect to get in, but it's been full for the past 10 minutes. Can the server actually hold as many riders as have signed up?

The place you qualify in should be your number for the big race... That way you have two and one digit numbers like real life.

2 qualifiers. meaning there will be 2 people that come in 1st thru 20th. and #1 would belong to last years champ.
