Actually blender has a great way of viewing normal maps. surprisingly enough it's not cycles! There is something called the "Terminator issue" other engines have the same problen.
(This is what the "Terminator issue" does )

So what I do is previewing normal maps in blender internal with GLSL shading (real time) It works perfectly for previewing normal maps very quick and fairly easy!
vortexracingleader if you don't know how to do it let me know and I can send you the pm I sent someone. where I showed how to do it. Its to long to post here I might do a good text tutorial sometime

Looks awesome, are the thin stripes that go round it extruded from the main cylinder or are they are a new object?

Separate objects, I could have made them all one piece but I didn't preplan the cyclinder edge count and the waffle strips would have been wide and looked off.

do you feel this was a better way of doing it or do you think having it as one object would have been better?

Depends what you are going for I guess, High poly models to be baked on to low poly, it's not necessary to be one piece and they are easier to work with in pieces. If it's a render piece and you want it as real as possible then you can go through the struggle of making in one piece but it would be difficult to get it to look right with out messing up other parts of the grip imo.

I'm not much of a high poly guy though, this probably the best piece I have done that is a modeled for a high poly purpose.

Usually with such shape you need to a good amount of sides. I used 96 as a starting point. That way you don´t have to add horizontal support loops that ruin the cylindrical shape, because the density of the sides will correct that. You can add vertical support edges though. Oh and I started the overall shape with just a cylinder and extruded the rest. Hope that made sense.
Also I think I Mason got the shape better done then me. Probably because he used an actual reference pic :D

Nah that is sick Kording! Honestly, if I were to do it again I would have done it your way, looks nicer, and the grip wire would have been 10x easier. Thanks for the insight!
