3D Max and Blender help!

Post by yomo »

This is a thread solely for asking problems related to creating models. (sticky it if you want?)
I know a lot of people are starting to look into modeling there own objects... Esspecially with the upcomming track contest

This is not for model requests!
This is not for showing models looking for criticism!

Purely specific questions

So that people know what is within this thread i will update this list of what has been asked, solved and will provide the link to the beginning of the question

Questions:
UV Map ratio
UV Map - joining edges

Ok obviously i have a question as i just posted this thread!

I have been making a semi trailer and im at the stage of unwrapping (Have been for sometime)
I have moved the "puzzle pieces" into an order im happy with and want to render the UV map...

Image

When i click render it wants to render it in the ratio
width of 2048
height of 2169

When i adjust the height so it is 2048 it obviously causes vertical stretching (however it makes it longer not shorter) ie a square would be a rectangle but the sides going up are longer than the top and bottom?

2 questions:
Firstly why is it doing this, and not putting it in a nice square ratio
If i use this weird ratio will the game not like it?

Cheer for any help guys

First off, you can optimize that uv map much better. get rid of the open space around the meshes by moving them closer together.

I will most likely start that entire model again tbh... I didnt even know how to target weld verticies

But yeah thanks ill defiantly use more of the space available.

Any tutorial suggestions for 3D Max or Blender for people that have no idea what they are doing? haha

Do the toaster tutorial, it helped me learn a lot.

I highly recommend this comprehensive tutorial which brings you from the introduction to 3D all the way to more advanced modeling. Depending on your modeling experience you can jump in wherever but if your getting started with blender make sure you do the user interface introduction.

Some good video tutorials for Blender (also has a user interface tutorial)

This is a question for UV unwrapping in 3D max

I have opened UVW unwrap and have a flattened image with all the polygons visible but not in the right order. Is there a way to join 2 faces so there sides line up exactly? I can obviously click and drag one face and make it as close to the next one but it still cant be perfect and I dont want to zoom in for every single face.

Thanks

Anyone else want to ask questions? :D

You can use different types of unwrapping, which did you use? You can use flatten, box ect.

What i do is select face, then planar map it. Then i go to line and select where i want to break off different sections. I then go to tools>relax and just mess with the settings of that. What thatll do is make each poly you select stretch itself to its original size on your mesh. Its a little hard to explain but pretty simple when you get used to it.

If you line the two edges you want to join pretty close together you can select them both and go to "tools>weld selected" This will weld them together. If the edges you want to weld are a shared edge on your model then "tools>stitch selected" will automatically weld the edges together no matter about their placement.

As already mentioned though, flatten is a bit awkward to use on a whole model.

Hey guys sorry to bring back a dead topic but Its relevant

Im Just wondering about how welding vertices works in 3D max. Once I beak all vertices (Select the vertices, right click, break) I can go and weld any vertices I wish together. Once some vertices have been welded together and I try to then weld another vertex it wont weld that vertex onto the already welded group.

I can post a screen shot but I think its understandable.

Anyway basically how does welding vertices together work?

Thanks
