He's all kinds of cool! Big martial arts guy, loves his gold Ferarris, got me through the 90s etc. I never tried Rage though. Masters of Doom was a good book in case you haven't checked it out.
I've heard of that but I haven't had a chance to read it yet. I do consider myself lucky to have been able to read the Michael Abrash articles right out of Dr Dobb's Journal when they were still relevant. People ask me how to get started programming and I have trouble finding good tutorials to point them at. For me the timing was almost perfect. As a kid, I programmed in BASIC on a VIC-20 which was super simple and a great way to get started. As a teen I learned C on an Amiga. When computer power really started exploding in the 90's-2000's it pretty much coincided with my knowledge expanding and I had great stuff to read like Abrash's "Ramblings in Realtime" column. When Id hired Abrash it was like the dream team to me.
Starting out now is kind of bewildering in comparison. The tutorials are usually just trying to sell a game engine and in general things are just unbelievably complicated now.

If you ever read a recommended book make it Hackers: Heroes of the Computer Revolution by Steven Levy. He also was the first journalist allowed full access in Google's Plex. Over 10 years ago but he wrote In the Plex and that's an interesting read into not being evil lol.

I highly recommend both! Play Rage 2 first, then play the original if you feel like hitting a 10 year rewind button when you're done. Rage 2 feels kind of like playing a weird interesting amalgamation of modern Doom, Far Cry, Mad Max and Borderlands. And Rage 1 is a great epilogue for Rage 2, but at this time feels extremely 2007.

It was suggested to me today as I was scrolling and some of this shit I came across was astonishing. Homie has a Carson Brown signed poster and asking how much it's worth. Another dude said he rode four strokes, now on a two stroke and "keeps looping out in the air" and there are about 20 comments telling him to adjust his suspension.
Everytime you post something stupid, a baby gets punched in the face. Please be smart, for the children.

After sitting at a desk and only programming for the last 5 years, I'm back to machining again. 11 foot long, one foot diameter, 3900 pound ChromeMoly Steel shafts! One or two parts a day. I'm really gonna have to get used to standing again. My hips and legs hurt, I'm stoked on the new work though. If you ever see those machines that they throw entire cars or whatever into and they just shred 'em up, that's what I'm making. Thanks for your time.

Day four last Thursday I go to the ER with a detached retina totally unrelated to trauma. All out-of-pocket cuz I'm not covered yet. Genetic macular degeneration. I do NOT recommend that odyssey to anyone. Panic inducing loss of vision. Finally back to work tomorrow. Phew!

No. The last bubble has dissipated and it's still blurry. Slowly getting better. I have a big floater in there and will probably need that removed later. Tuesday after next I get a check up and I'll ask about it. Old age sux!
